It’s time to get things started!

October 8, 2009

It seems The Muppets are in fashion, and so they should be – The Muppets are cool, and always will be!

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac debuted his Muppets-inspired A/W 2009 collection earlier this year during Paris fashion week, and now that season has arrived, it seems that The Muppets are slowly taking over.

Lady Gaga has also made no secret of her love for all things Muppet-related; from her date with Kermit at this years VMA’s, to her Kermit coat she wore on a German TV show, and most recently the Animal skirt shown above.

And now Katy Perry has found herself unable to resist the Muppets furry charms. What do you think of these designs? Would you wear any of them?

If I was a rich girl…

…I would love to own a piece of Tarina Tarantino jewellery. Below are some of my current SQUEE’s on her web site:

I am a huge fan of Tarina, both as a designer and as a person. With her pink hair, amazing style and reputation for being incredibly friendly, she is a living sparkle. I can honestly say that no other jewellery designer has made me feel this excited about jewellery; each piece is beautiful and finished off with gorgeous European Swarovski crystals.

What do you think of Tarina Tarantino? If you’re a fan, what are some of your favourite pieces?

Hehehehehe…..

Is it silly that I’m feeling quite Christmassy today? It’s not even been Halloween!

A Tribute to Clarissa Darling

September 28, 2009

Ah, Clarissa Darling. The ultimate in preadolescent/young teen icons of the 90′s.

One of the things that made Clarissa so instantly likeable was that she was so… real. She could be any teenage girl, in any town, going through the usual annoyances and traumas of school and puberty. But she was also a bit different, a bit eccentric – she was quirky before quirky characters became the norm, was genuinely happy being herself and that’s what made her the perfect role model.

After all, is there any point in a role model when you’ve already achieved everything they can do and the things that you like about them? Clarissa could do things that were just so cool, things I could only dream of being able to do, but that in turn inspired me to find my own cool things that I could do.

For example, Clarissa was great with computers. She would often whip up mini video games that involved killing her younger brother Ferguson – what 90′s child didn’t want to make their own video games?! And I’m sure every viewer with an annoying younger brother could relate (being an only child, I can only assume this to be the case)… I wanted to kill Ferguson.

As if she needed anymore cool points, she also had a pet alligator called Elvis (although he mysteriously disappeared…), a phone in her bedroom (a cool see-through one no less) and her best friend Sam could come over whenever he wanted to, due to the fact he had a ladder that went to Clarissa’s bedroom window.

And last but not least, let’s not forget her impeccable fashion sense! If Clarissa were a member of The Babysitters Club, she’d be up there with Stacey McGill and Claudia Kishi. I still get inspired watching episodes of Clarissa Explains It All today!

Raquel Reed

September 24, 2009

She’s a model, a style icon, a make-up artist, and now Raquel Reed can add “musician” to her evergrowing CV.

Three tracks are currently available to listen to on her Myspace page. Personally, I can’t get enough them, especially The Fast Lane.

Raquel’s music is fun and very 80′s inspired, I’d recommend it to any fans of electro, particuarly bands like Le Tigre and Lady Gaga.

Check out her music here: http://www.myspace.com/ewraquel

Sweet Valley High

September 23, 2009

I read a lot during my tween and early teen years, and two series in particular still hold a special place in my heart; Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High. I’m going to talk about Sweet Valley High today, but don’t be surprised if I dedicate a post to Babysitters Club at some point too.

So, you may be wondering, what has inspired this sudden sense of nostalgia? Well, I have just read that Diablo Cody has expressed an interest in (or has signed up to, depending on what article you read) writing a Sweet Valley High screenplay. This has left me feeling pretty excited.

First of all, I’m a big fan of Diablo Cody. I love Juno, and enjoyed reading her memoir; I’ve yet to see Jennifer’s Body, and I think it’s a shame it’s not doing so well. However, even if the film isn’t that great (I’m not making my mind up til I see it myself), I’ll forgive miss Cody, because I think people can still be great even if not everything they produce is gold :-p

I’m very interested to see what she’ll do with this series.

As well as reading the books, I also watched the TV show. I always preferred Elizabeth in the show, but in the books, I would always change my mind about who I liked best. My true favourite character though will always be Enid.

The series was so delightfully far fetched too! Some of the most memorable storylines include Jessica falling in love with a vampire, someone trying to steal the twins mothers face at a beauty spa via a face transplant, as well as countless murders and stalkings.

Did you read Sweet Valley High while growing up? Who do you think should play the twins if this movie goes ahead?

goodbye summer

September 21, 2009

So, here in the UK, summer is officially over (not that it seemed to last long this year, in terms of actual sunshine), and normally at this time of year I find myself feeling a little down; it’s darker and colder, which leaves me feeling unmotivated to do little more than hide under my blanket and spend countless hours online.

I know I’m not the only one to feel this way at this time of year, so here are some of the things I’ve found help a little…

*Coffee - getting up on a freezing cold morning is truly a horrible thing, but the pain can be eased slightly by coffee. If you don’t have one, consider investing in a coffee maker; this morning the only thing stopping me from ignoring my alarm and going back to sleep was the fact that within about five minutes, I could have a whole jug of freshly brewed caffeine goodness.

*Resist the temptation to just throw on whatever outfit keeps you warm – okay, the days are officially darker and duller, which to me seems only to emphasise the importance of making sure you don’t do the same. As superficial as it may sound, it’s amazing how even just wearing some bright, colourful eye make-up can make you feel a little more chipper. Today for example, I opted for purple :)

*Scarves! – I have a few scarves, all suitably bright and cheery to keep me warm and chipper. They’re fun, and not having to wear the same thing everyday over your outfit can help you to stop feeling dull and boring. You could even check out some charity shops for some cheap coats or hats to help keep things interesting.

*Brush up on your cooking skills – it’s an indoor activity, meaning you don’t have to go outside and face the evil cold, and if it goes well, you get to something nice to eat out of it!

What kind of things do you like to do at this time of year?

Oh look, a list!

September 20, 2009

Yesterday, to keep a boring train journey from being a painfully boring train journey, I got myself the latest copy of Company magazine. It did the job well, featuring, among other things, their “Top Ten Best Dressed Brits Under 30″.

Whenever I see a list of this sort, I immediately want to make my own version. Partly because I obsessively make lists anyway, and partly because I usually don’t quite agree and feel the need to get my opinion on paper (or in this case, on screen).

Plus, it’s much more productive than sitting and complaining how much you disagree – I’d recommend it to anyone.

However, I have decided not to limit mine to British people. I guess there are just too many FABulous people in the world :-p

So, here you have it, the first top ten of this blog: The Kitty Collar Best Dressed Under 30!

katy*Katy Perry

With her kitschy, girly and, sometimes food inspired(!), outfits, along with her infectiously catchy music, Miss Perry has fast become one of those Pop Stars It’s Okay To Like.

Katy’s style largely consists of bright dresses, food shaped accessories, Hello Kitty, Tarina Tarantino jewellery and colourful high heels.

Some of her most memorable outfits include a playing cards dress (as seen in the picture), a pink panda dress and a yellow dress covered in musical notes.

taylor momsen*Taylor Momsen

At only 16 years old, actress and musician Taylor Momsen is already (albeit slightly controversially) being hailed by some as a style icon.

It’s no secret that Taylor is heavily inspired by Courtney Love, and this is reflected in her blonde, messy hair, dark eye make-up and red lipstick combination.

As for clothes, Taylor often goes for leather jackets, black boots, long statement necklaces, ripped jeans/leggings, mixed with glam dresses or plaid shirts.

doe*Doe Deere

It’s fair to say that musician, make-up artist/designer, model and blogger Doe Deere loves colour. She’s not afraid to stand out, and has long been inspiring other people to embrace colour too, through her make-up tutorials (which can be seen on her blog, doedeereblogazine.com) and, more recently, her very bright make-up range Lime Crime.

Classic Doe Deere looks involve bright colours, pretty knee-length skirts, coloured tights and matching bright make-up, while common motifs include unicorns and, of course, deers!

alice*Alice Glass

My look is more Grandmother’s leftovers than Heroin Chic

Alice Glass is the chaotic frontwoman of Canadian electro band Crystal Castles. Her style is simple, yet makes her look like some kind of punk icon, something I am undeniably jealous of!

Alice can often been seen wearing ripped tights (though the “ripped” part is mainly due to the fact that, while touring, tights rarely remain intact), sneakers, a leather jacket and granny-style pencil skirts (some of which actually did belong to her Grandma).

amelia*Amelia Arsenic

Model, make-up designer and vocalist in cyberpunk band Angelspit, Amelia Arsenic’s style is made up mainly of the colours black, white and red, yet her outfits still stand out and she never looks boring. How does she do it?

Some of Amelia’s staple items are corsets, eye patches, pencil skirts, synthetic hair, gloves and high heels/platform shoes.

It’s also worth mentioning that bold, dramatic make-up is a big part of Amelia’s look, and she has a few tutorials posted on her blog at destroyx.com

agyness*Agyness Deyn

Agyness Deyn is a rarity; a mainstream model who isn’t really that into following fashion. She seems to fear nothing when it comes to what she wears, a quality I can’t help but admire and feel inspired by.

Staples of Agyness’ look include a leather jacket, band t-shirts,mens blazers, flannel shirts, sneakers, lots of different hats, denim jackets and coloured tights, mixed with pretty much anything else you find in the back of your wardrobe :-p

Fashion isn’t me, even though I work in it. It’s just materialistic stuff.” – Agyness

zooey*Zooey Deschanel

Known almost as much for her, often vintage inspired, fashion sense as she is for her roles in various indie films and being the “she” in the band She and Him, Zooey was one of the first people I thought to include inthis list.

Staples of Zooey’s style include vintage dresses (particularly 50′s/60′s), hair bands (especially with bows) and coloured tights.

It’s an addiction. I love clothes. I like to go down Melrose and look in all the windows and I go to different flea markets. I have lots of costumes. You never know when you’re going to have to dress up like a milkmaid from the 1600s” – Zooey

kate*Kate Nash

Kate Nash is a lovely British girl, whose music I love. It’s kind of like what I’d imagine a collaboration between Lily Allen and Regina Spektor would sound like. I’d quite like to have a cup of tea with her.

As for her style, it’s a flawless mix of vintage dresses, floral prints and hair bows.  When asked about it by Venus Zine, Kate said: “I focus on dresses, skirts, jackets, jumpers, vintage, T-shirts. I don’t really wear trousers. But then with my figure, I’ve got hips and boobs and a small waist, so if I wear trousers straight down, they don’t see things, I just look big all around. Whereas if I wear a dress and it tucks in at the right place, I just feel more comfortable in it. I used to love ’50s icons when I was growing up, like Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Bissett. I like watching old films; the women always look pretty.

So there you have it! What do you think? Who would be in your top ten?

Another addition to the blogosphere…

September 13, 2009

Welcome to The Kitty Collar :)

I’m not really a fan of introductory posts to be honest, I prefer to just jump straight in. So I think that’s what I’m going to do!

Enjoy xxx
